SUMMARY:DjangoFest Mill Valley Kick-off featuring Tim Kliphuis Trio
DESCRIPTION:DjangoFest Mill Valley returns to the Throckmorton Theatre this Labor Day Weekend! The Gypsy Jazz festival will feature four days of incredible concerts\, workshops and parties\, and culminates in the ultimate “djam” performance. This will mark the festival’s 14th year in Mill Valley\, and it promises to\, once again\, bring together some of the world’s best and brightest musicians. \nThe festival kicks-off Thursday evening\, August 30th with Dutch violinist Tim Kliphuis\, bassist Simon Planting\, and guitarist Brad Brose. Following the concert\, attendees are invited to join us for an after-party (details TBA). \n6:30 PM – Doors and Merchandise Room Open\n \n7:30 PM – Mainstage Concert featuring Tim Kliphuis\, Brad Brose and Simon Planting \nTIM KLIPHUIS\nAward-winning Dutch violinist Tim Kliphuis has created a brand new style that embraces classical\, gypsy jazz and folk. Hailed as a ‘current-day improvising Paganini’\, his inclusive approach to music has united audiences and is influencing a new generation of string players. After his master’s degree in classical violin at the Amsterdam Conservatoire\, Tim studied with the European Sinti gypsies. He recorded and toured with gypsy guitar legends Fapy Lafertin\, The Rosenberg Trio and Angelo Debarre. Tim has also performed for the Dutch King at the Amsterdam Concertgebouw\, for Celtic Connections Glasgow\, at the Django Reinhardt Festival in Samois-sur-Seine and has toured America\, South Africa and Russia extensively. Tim has shared the stage with Les Paul\, Richard Galliano\, Frankie Gavin and Martin Hayes\, as well as the Netherlands and Tallinn Chamber Orchestras\, The Hague and Cape Town Philharmonic and Sinfonietta Amsterdam. Author of the best-selling book “Gypsy Jazz Violin\,” Tim is an in-demand educator and teaches improvisation at the Amsterdam Conservatoire and his own summer school\, Grappelli-Django Camp. \nSIMON PLANTING\nDutch double bassist Simon Planting studied Classical bass at the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra and Jazz at the Sweelinck Conservatory in Amsterdam before embarking on a professional career that has seen him perform in concerts and festivals around the gobe. Simon has compiled an impressive discography with artists like Mathilde Santing\, Fapy Lafertin\, Jimmy Rosenberg\, Stephane Wrembel\, and John Jorgenson as well as several Gypsy Jazz tributes and compilations. He quickly became established in Dutch radio and television in a ten-year association with noted pianist/arranger Cor Bakker. In 2009\, Simon joined the legendary John Jorgensen Quintet. Along the way he has also performed with top Jazz Manouche guitarists such as Angelo Debarre\, Dorado\, Tjavalo and Samson Schmitt\, Gonzalo Bergara and other Jazz greats\, Larry Coryell\, Bill Frisell and Howard Alden to name a few. \nBRAD BROSE\nFrom Hollywood\, California\, Brad Brose performed with some of the best swing musicians that the U.S. has to offer. After playing in swing dance clubs and festivals throughout California\, Brad decided to move to Paris in 2009 to directly learn Europe’s greatest contribution to jazz: Jazz Manouche (French for Gypsy Jazz). In Paris\, he plays his gypsy jazz guitar along with the best and most well-known jazz manouche artists in all of the legendary gypsy jazz clubs such as taverne de cluny\, les petits joueurs\, and many others. His goal is to bring together Europe’s greatest swing musicians with America’s best to form an international collective and bridge the two continents together \n \n\nTICKETS\nGeneral Admission – $35\nWeekend Concert Pass (includes Reserved Seating for all 4 concerts) – $199 | BUY PASS \nAll Opening Night Concert tickets are General Admission only.\nReserved Seating exclusive to Weekend Concert Pass holders and Sponsors. \n
