SUMMARY:3-6pm Tivoli: Sunday Sessions Chai and Chocolate
DESCRIPTION:Come for a few hours of respite and enjoy mugs of non-stop chai\, organic local chocolates from Alter Eco and the inspiration of exotic music and good friends!  We are proud to welcome musicians Steve Oda\, master of the sarode\, and Michael Lewis to the gathering this afternoon. \nSteve Oda began his musical education at the age of seven\, learning to play slide guitar and then jazz guitar. His love of creativity through musical expression led him to the classical music of North India and the sarode. His practice started earnestly with Ustad Aashish Khan in 1971\, and then in 1973 he became a disciple of Aashish’s father\, the legendary musician\, Maestro Ali Akbar Khan\, one of India’s treasures. Since then Steve has dedicated himself to fully learning this complex art form and to carry on the teachings of his illustrious guru. In 1996\, he received a prestigious Canada Council Artist’s Grant to pursue intensive studies at an advanced level with Ali Akbar Khan. \nMichael Lewis is one of the finest American tabla players today. A disciple of the late Ustad Allah Rahka\, and long time student of Ustad Zakir Hussain\, he has accompanied many Indian classical artists\, including Ustad Zakir Hussain as a member of the Rhythm Experience\, Vishwa Mohan Bhatt\, Krishna Bhatt and Partho Chatterjee. Very popular in the Bay Area classical music scene\, Michael is widely appreciated by artists for his lyrical style and sensitive accompaniments. \nWe are grateful to Alter Eco for providing their beautiful organic chocolates for this event.  We are providing this event complimentary to the public.  Throckmorton Theatre is committed to fostering community and providing transforming musical experiences in intimate settings. \n
