SUMMARY:DjangoFest Mill Valley Concert - Paulus Schäfer\, Tim Kliphuis\, Simon Planting and Special Guest Samuel Farthing
DESCRIPTION:Join us for night two of the 15th annual DjangoFest Mill Valley featuring some of the Netherlands’ best Gypsy Jazz musicians Paulus Schäfer (guitarist)\, Tim Kliphuis (violinist) and Simon Planting (double bassist) with special guest and guitar prodigy\, Samuel Farthing. \nPAULUS SCHÄFER\nA composer and arranger\, Paulus Schäfer is considered to be one of the most talented Gypsy Jazz or “Jazz Manouche” guitar players from the Netherlands. Schäfer was born into a Dutch Sinti (Gypsy) community where he was taught to play the guitar at a very early age. After a short period of time he took over the lead guitar of Jimmy Rosenberg in the Gypsy Kids before forming his own Paulus Schäfer Gypsy Band. Schäfer quickly established himself as a front runner in the genre\, headlining jazz festivals all around the globe. He has recorded and performed on stage with many renowned artists including Stochelo Rosenberg\, Fapy Lafertin\, Tim Kliphuis\, Jimmy Rosenberg\, Dominique Paats\, Biréli Lagrène\, and Andreas Öberg. Schäfer also created his own online school\, one of the most popular schools in the world. He is also one of the most sought after teachers in the genre. \nTIM KLIPHUIS\nAward-winning Dutch violinist Tim Kliphuis has created a brand new style that embraces classical\, gypsy jazz and folk. Hailed as a ‘current-day improvising Paganini’\, his inclusive approach to music has united audiences and is influencing a new generation of string players. After his master’s degree in classical violin at the Amsterdam Conservatoire\, Tim studied with the European Sinti gypsies. He recorded and toured with gypsy guitar legends Fapy Lafertin\, The Rosenberg Trio and Angelo Debarre. Tim has also performed for the Dutch King at the Amsterdam Concertgebouw\, for Celtic Connections Glasgow\, at the Django Reinhardt Festival in Samois-sur-Seine and has toured America\, South Africa and Russia extensively. Tim has shared the stage with Les Paul\, Richard Galliano\, Frankie Gavin and Martin Hayes\, as well as the Netherlands and Tallinn Chamber Orchestras\, The Hague and Cape Town Philharmonic and Sinfonietta Amsterdam. Author of the best-selling book “Gypsy Jazz Violin\,” Tim is an in-demand educator and teaches improvisation at the Amsterdam Conservatoire and his own summer school\, Grappelli-Django Camp. \nSIMON PLANTING\nDutch double bassist Simon Planting studied Classical bass at the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra and Jazz at the Sweelinck Conservatory in Amsterdam before embarking on a professional career that has seen him perform in concerts and festivals around the gobe. Simon has compiled an impressive discography with artists like Mathilde Santing\, Fapy Lafertin\, Jimmy Rosenberg\, Stephane Wrembel\, and John Jorgenson as well as several Gypsy Jazz tributes and compilations. He quickly became established in Dutch radio and television in a ten-year association with noted pianist/arranger Cor Bakker. In 2009\, Simon joined the legendary John Jorgensen Quintet. \nSAMUEL FARTHING\nSamuel Farthing is a 15 year-old jazz swing guitarist inspired by the legendary French manouche guitarist Django Reinhardt.  Samuel lives in a Maryland suburb within the Baltimore/Washington corridor. He started playing guitar at age 10 and stumbled into gypsy jazz at age 13. Since then\, it has been his passion and inspiration. Sam’s talent far exceeds his number of years playing. He is considered one of the finest young up-and-coming gypsy jazz guitarists in the world…” \n\nTICKETS\nGeneral Admission – $35\nReserved Seating – $50 \n\nFESTIVAL PASSES  —  Save 20%\nWeekend Concert Pass – $120  |  GET FESTIVAL PASS \nDFMV Pass holders will enjoy the venue’s best reserved seating for all 3 nights of the festival and have access to all festival parties\, djams and more! \n\nWHAT IS DJANGOFEST MILL VALLEY?\n\nLearn more about DFMV and check out this year’s schedule of events here. \n
