SUMMARY:Ian Dogole's Music Beyond Borders Concert
DESCRIPTION:Multipercussionist/bandleader/recording artist Ian Dogole and his stellar cast of collaborators will dazzle you tonight!  This concert of adventurous music pushes the envelope – straddling the intersections of Jazz\, world music and free improvisation.  Experience a stunning array of drums and melodic percussion instruments that bridge the ancient and the modern – from the traditional clay pot (udu) and talking drum of Nigeria – to the East African thumb piano (kalimba) – to the Afro-Peruvian box drum (cajon) – to the riveting futuristic Swiss melodic percussion invention inspired by the steel pans of Trinidad (hang). \nMix in a dizzying assortment of woodwinds (including 3 bass clarinets playing together) and grand piano and double bass\, and you can start to create a picture of the visual and aural palette that will grace our stage.  The compositional talents of the band will be included along with fresh interpretations of pieces by Jazz luminaries such as Alice Coltrane\, Michael Brecker and Dave Holland. \nHorace Mansfield Jr.\, host of “Point of Departure” on KPFA\, will be the emcee for the night’s festivities. \nMusicians: \n\nIan Dogole – African\, South American and European drums & melodic percussion\, cymbals and shakers\nPaul McCandless – woodwinds\nSheldon Brown – woodwinds\nDave Tidball – woodwinds\nFrank Martin – piano\nFred Randolph – double bass\n\n \n
