SUMMARY:September Artist Reception and Tuesday Art Walk
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for First Tuesday Art Walk and Artist Reception for our September Artists from 5-7pm!\n\n\nSEPTEMBER 2019 ART EXHIBIT\nThrockmorton Theatre Main Gallery\nArtist: Angelique Benicio\nShow Name: Lore\nMedium: Oil Painting \nWhaling Wall\, 20”x16”\, archival pigment print\nArtist Statement  Angelique Benicio’s paintings focus on unguarded characters who encounter a world suddenly understood as more mysterious and vast. Her work evokes both the enchantment and eerie quality of Grimm’s fairytales. While the immediacy of the artist’s oil paintings first draws the viewer in with their lush surfaces and traditional style\, undercurrents of a more contemporary and unsettled content gradually surface. Many of her works depict a childlike irrefutable animal instinct. Others reveal an acute awareness of uneasy surroundings. The artist insists that innocence and experience do not advance or recede in time\, but always come braided together irrespective of age.  Benicio is an artist who currently lives and works in San Rafael. Her work has been exhibited throughout the Bay Area\, Southern California\, Oregon and in Norway and Brazil.www.angeliquebenicio.com \nCrescendo Gallery\nArtist: Rhonda Dubin\nShow Name: A Closer Look\nMedium: Photography \n\nImpervious Mollusks\, 20″ x 14″\, Oil on wood\n\nArtist Statement  After a discouraging critique by a photography professor while I was in art school many years ago\, I quietly put down my first 35mm camera\, believing I would never take photographs again. It wasn’t until the digital age when my techie instincts took over that I fell in love with taking photographs again. I am delighted by color\, form\, texture\, patina and these serendipitous juxtaposition of those elements and the visual treats they present. I live amongst the glorious Redwood trees in Northern California\, yet my inspiration mostly comes from travels here and there. You will often find me taking close-up photographs of walls\, sidewalks\, cobblestones and other mundane details of the street. I feel like an archaeologist gathering treasures…and when I lay them out before me I have a sense of the place I have been.  Lately\, I have been exploring urban themes which also provide me with a way of seeing through shape\, line and texture. I tend to see things graphically\, “straight on” and close up. I might first see a building as a series of shapes such as squares\, rectangles and triangles rather than the whole image at once. What excites me most is the quirky nature of the urban landscape\, and opportunities to look for details easily overlooked – seeing the unseen\, the spaces in between\, the emerging patterns and visual surprises that present themselves in an urban environment.  Inspired by a collection of tiny photogravures I viewed at an exhibit\, I decided to experiment in my digital darkroom to make my own “Little Treasures.” The two small sepia prints in this exhibit were created using layers\, texturing and compositing. In the series “Etta’s Table”\, nothing has been changed or arranged in the still life images. They are an intimate view of her life as a creative artist.  I invite you to take a closer look. \n  \n\n\n
