Singer Derek Evans is a product of a lush musical environment that swells with the cultural diversity that only a city like San Francisco can provide. A Soulful singer with an impressive voice, Derek has been the much loved lead vocalist for Saxophone Great Jules Broussard’s band for over 20 years.
Derek’s love for music grew from his early childhood in Hickory, Mississippi. As a child, he’d sit in his grandmother’s lap as she sang and played piano, leading the inspirational choir in the soul stirring syncopated rhythms, dynamic vibratos, and emotional crescendos delivered every Sunday to the congregation of True Light Baptist Church.
As a teenager, Derek was inspired by the blend of church and secular music created by Ray Charles. He plunged head first into the rich musical diveristy of San Francisco. Derek’s love for diversity embraces many styles of music; he is equally at home with a jazz standard, a country tune, blues, pop, funk, rock & roll or soul, exploring music new and old.
