Bradford Butler, Artist’s Statement
The regurgitation of information implodes and explodes. There is a containment of silence within an atmosphere of activity, emotion, and instability. My marks represent disordered life, chaos becoming structure, structure then failing, to be rebuilt. Inherently inconsistent, the paintings and sculptures can be made only through an intuitive, arbitrary process. My art explores the unstable mind, reasoning for moments of understanding. This art confronts the encounters of information accumulated everyday. The body of work rests, never, an interminable quest for more questions. “I can’t go on. Marie Van Elder, Artist Statement
In Van Elder’ work, fairy tales, old masters painting, girlhood memories, domestic elements and teen culture are collaged together to create a intimate yet oddly theatrical (often dark) one page narrative. Tweenies- heroines are comically involved in games, chores, little rituals and rites of passage, role-playing or simply awkwardly stand there in all their self-aware angst, absorbing life ambiguities www.marievanelder.net
