In this highly accessible two-day workshop taught by Peter Sweet Adeney and David Poznanter, we will explore the foundations of mask theatre, an endlessly rich realm of physicality and improvisation. The work incorporates a wide range of exercises and approaches from physical theater and Commedia dell’Arte, with an emphasis on presence and physical expression.

Beginning with group work in spatial awareness, breath and contact, we will explore ways of transforming our state, bodies, and ultimately the space around us. From this base we will add the basic techniques of mask theatre: articulation, fixed points and “mask takes,” which allow us to dive into the meat of the work – theatrical improvisations in Expressive (full) masks.

This workshop is open to actors, dancers, circus artists, and directors, as well as construction workers, lawyers, astronauts, and anyone interested in exploring the world of masks.
