Throckmorton’s Sunday Sessions presents the Nathan Bickart Quartet! Featuring bassist Owen Clapp, guitarist Lu Salcedo, drummer Mike Mitchell, and pianist Nathan Bickart.
The Nathan Bickart Quartet combines a deep respect for jazz heritage with a desire to explore the ways in which this tradition has transformed into and supported related genres like R&B, funk, and hip-hop. The Nathan Bickart Quartet (and sometimes Trio) writes and performs new original material for each Sunday Session concert and performs new non-original material depending on what the musicians are in the mood for and what they are listening to that month.
Reflecting on the Sunday Sessions process of presenting new original material each month, Nathan Bickart writes, “Working on the new material is really rewarding for us as musicians, and hopefully also engaging for the audience- our hope is that the material is a reflection of the world as the audience knows it, i.e. not only related to the musician’s experiences.”
Nathan Bickart is a pianist, composer, and educator based in Berkeley, CA. Classically trained since age 6, Nathan began to play jazz in high school and has been heavily involved in the Bay Area jazz scene ever since. Nathan graduated from UC Berkeley, where he studied both Ecology and Music and learned from Bay Area piano greats Myra Melford, Peter Horvath, Gini Wilson, and Frank Martin. His music combines eclectic influences ranging from hip-hop to bluegrass, from Bill Evans to Robert Glasper.
There is an incredible wealth of talent who make their home right here in the Bay Area. Our Sunday Sessions invite performers in to share their talents and our community in to enjoy and be inspired! We pay a small stipend to performers, donations to support these events are gratefully accepted.
The Throckmorton is dedicated to the inclusion of all members of our diverse community; every member is entitled to be exposed to thought-provoking, multicultural events.
